What to do
Ten experiences that explain Alsace.
These are editorial experiences, not an affiliate inventory. Each entry explains what it contributes, how to approach it and where a rushed itinerary usually goes wrong.
1
Strasbourg Grande-Île + Petite France
Walk the UNESCO-listed island as an urban system: the cathedral precinct, civic squares, canals, covered bridges and former tanners’ quarter. Petite France is most useful when connected to the city’s commercial waterways and defenses, not treated as a detached photo set.

2
Notre-Dame Cathedral
The cathedral was built between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries and still functions as a place of worship. Read its sandstone façade and interior before deciding whether the astronomical clock or platform fits the day; religious services and official visitor rules take priority.

3
Neustadt + European Quarter
Follow Strasbourg beyond the medieval island into the German-planned Neustadt, added to the UNESCO property in 2017, then continue to the European institutions. The Parliament visitor offer turns today’s transnational role into a living counterpoint to the city’s contested history.

4
Colmar historic center + Little Venice
Trace the pedestrian core from medieval and Renaissance merchant houses to the Tanners’ district, covered market and canal-side Little Venice. Colmar tourism describes a protected historic sector between the Vosges and Rhine; morning and evening reveal more than a midday circuit.

5
Unterlinden Museum
Use the former convent and its modern extension to move from the Isenheim Altarpiece through archaeology, decorative arts and modern collections. It is Colmar’s essential indoor counterweight to the streetscape; check the museum’s own site for current galleries and timed conditions.

6
Alsace Wine Route
The official route stretches 170 kilometres from Marlenheim to Thann through vineyards, towns and villages. Choose one geographic section and a small number of producers, confirm visits directly and assign a non-drinking driver or use an organized alternative.

7
Eguisheim, Kaysersberg, Riquewihr + Ribeauvillé
These well-known villages are not interchangeable: street plans, fortifications, churches, wine estates and surrounding slopes differ. Pick two that fit the day, park once where appropriate and walk beyond the most photographed lane; the official Wine Route identifies all four as key stops.
Village rule · choose two, not four
8
Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg
Set above the Rhine plain, the castle interprets roughly nine centuries of strategic occupation, ruin and reconstruction. Its elevation makes the panorama part of the visit, but access, weather and the current visitor schedule should be checked on the official site before building the rural day.

9
Cité de l’Automobile · Mulhouse
Mulhouse’s automobile collection provides a precise industrial and design chapter, far removed from the vineyard narrative. Give it enough time to understand engineering, coachwork and collecting rather than using the city as a hurried final stop.

10
Vosges ridges + valleys
The mountains form Alsace’s western wall and explain the slope, weather and vineyard geography below. Select a marked walk, valley or ridge drive appropriate to the season and live conditions; mountain time should replace another excursion, not be squeezed between villages.
