What to do
Ten anchors that explain Jasper as a living park, a recovering community and a high-country road system.
This is a planning sequence, not a ranking. It balances town context, open lake access, honest closures, dark skies, waterfalls and glacier-country decisions.
1️⃣
1. Jasper townsite and Information Centre
Begin where supplies, current conditions and the community recovery story come together. The townsite is the practical base—not an interchangeable resort strip—and the Parks Canada information centre is the place to reconcile roads, trails, fire recovery, wildlife restrictions and the day’s actual options.
Best for · orientation + recovery contextOfficial current status
2️⃣
2. Pyramid Lake and Patricia Lake
These close-to-town lakes turn the Pyramid Bench into a flexible first or weather-recovery day. Walk or bike from town where conditions allow, use Pyramid Island’s accessible footbridge, or choose a measured shoreline and paddle plan. Watercraft and equipment rules protect the park from aquatic invasive species.
Best for · low-friction lake time + town accessOfficial lake guide
3️⃣
3. Maligne Canyon—only after reopening is confirmed
The narrow limestone canyon drops more than 50 metres and normally reveals waterfalls, fossils and underground outlets. It is also a test of honest planning: Parks Canada kept the canyon closed for the 2026 season while post-fire hazards and rehabilitation were assessed. Do not route around a closure or assume a future opening date.
Best for · canyon geology when officially openOfficial canyon status
4️⃣
4. Medicine Lake and the Maligne Road
Medicine Lake is a landscape and hydrology stop on the way to Maligne Lake, not a substitute parking lot for a rushed loop. Use the corridor to read changing forest, water and wildlife habitat, then continue only when road, smoke, weather and daylight leave enough margin for the return to Jasper.
Best for · valley sequence + natural systemsOfficial points of interest
5️⃣
5. Maligne Lake
The 22-kilometre natural lake extends toward Spirit Island and Coronet Glacier beneath snow-and-ice-capped peaks. Choose the lakeshore, an official trail, paddling or a seasonal cruise as one primary experience. Boat operations, water rules, weather and wildlife conditions must all be checked for the exact date.
Best for · long-lake scale + one deliberate activityOfficial Maligne Lake guide
6️⃣
6. Jasper Dark Sky Preserve
Jasper is one of Canada’s designated Dark Sky Preserves and combines protected night conditions with a town inside the preserve. Build stargazing around darkness, clouds, moonlight and safe access rather than promising an aurora. A planetarium or guided telescope session can create a useful bad-weather or learning layer.
Best for · astronomy + night landscapeOfficial Tourism Jasper guide
7️⃣
7. Whistlers Mountain and Jasper SkyTram
The tram provides a managed elevation change and wide view over the townsite, Athabasca Valley and surrounding ranges. Visibility and wind are the product, so confirm the operating season, departure time and summit conditions before paying. Keep a valley-level alternative for smoke, cloud or strong wind.
Best for · accessible elevation + spatial overviewOfficial destination listing
8️⃣
8. Athabasca Falls
The falls drop about 23 metres, but the force of the Athabasca River—not height alone—explains the site. Follow established viewpoints through the quartzite-and-limestone canyon and stay behind barriers. This is a focused Parkway stop, not a reason to overfill the entire road day.
Best for · river power + compact geology stopOfficial Athabasca Falls guide
9️⃣
9. Sunwapta Falls
Sunwapta adds a different river-and-forest chapter farther south on Highway 93. The upper viewpoint can be paired with the official Lower Sunwapta route when conditions, time and ability fit. Keep food and wildlife discipline especially strong in this recovering and ecologically active corridor.
Best for · Parkway waterfall + measured walkOfficial Sunwapta Falls guide
🔟
10. Columbia Icefield, Athabasca Glacier and Parker Ridge
The Icefield Centre area is the high-country climax, not a final checkbox after too many stops. Read the glacier landscape from official viewpoints or one suitable trail, and choose Parker Ridge only when wind, snow, visibility, daylight and the hiker’s ability agree. Never walk onto glacier ice without an authorized guided activity.
Best for · glacier literacy + high-country restraintOfficial icefield guidance
Core roles and access logic were checked October 23, 2026 against Parks Canada and Tourism Jasper. Parks Canada currently identifies Maligne Canyon and Mount Edith Cavell as closed for the 2026 season, while its open-area page lists many town, lake and Parkway alternatives. Recheck opening status, roads, trails, smoke, wildfire restrictions, wildlife closures, winter-tire rules and every seasonal operator for the exact travel date.
