What to do
Eight Lisbon experiences worth building a first trip around.
A balanced shortlist across the medieval hills, Belém, major museums, the downtown riverfront and modern Parque das Nações.
🏰
Castelo de São Jorge
Use the castle as both history and orientation: ramparts, archaeological layers and broad views make the hilltop easier to understand before you descend through Alfama. The official program currently includes guided discovery visits, but exact schedules can change.

Alfama, Sé & the miradouros
Lisbon's oldest central fabric is best experienced as a slow walk rather than a single attraction. Link the cathedral, lanes, tiled façades and viewpoints, allowing extra time for steep grades and stairs instead of trying to follow the most direct map route.
Neighborhood · walking
⛪
Jerónimos Monastery
The Manueline cloister and church anchor Belém's maritime-era history. The cloister and church follow different visiting schedules, so check the official monument page rather than assuming one opening time covers the whole complex.

🗼
Belém Tower
The river fortress reopened to visitors in May 2026 after conservation work and now uses defined entry slots to control visitor flow. Treat it as a timed stop and combine it geographically with the monastery and waterfront rather than crossing the city twice.

🎨
MAAT & the Belém riverfront
MAAT adds contemporary art, architecture and industrial heritage to a district otherwise dominated by older monuments. The museum is currently open Wednesday through Monday, making weekday alignment important when pairing it with Belém sights that close on Mondays.

Praça do Comércio, Baixa & Chiado
Start at the Tagus-facing square and walk north through the rebuilt downtown grid before climbing toward Chiado. This sequence gives a useful first-day mental map and lets cafés, shops, churches and smaller streets fill the spaces between headline monuments.

Calouste Gulbenkian Museum & Garden
The museum reopened in July 2026 after a major renovation and renewed presentation of the collection. Pair the galleries with the surrounding garden for a lower-intensity cultural day away from the busiest monument corridor.

Oceanário & Parque das Nações
The Oceanário is a strong family and bad-weather option in the modern eastern riverfront district. It is open daily, with Oriente on the Red Metro Line providing the simplest public-transport anchor for the area.
Family · modern riverfront
Core attraction information reconfirmed 19 Sep 2026 against current official venue and public-institution sources, including the
National Tile Museum. Belém Tower has operated with timed entry slots since its 2026 reopening; the Gulbenkian Museum has reopened after renovation; and venue hours or temporary access rules can still change. Always reconfirm the official venue for your exact date.
