What to do
Ten experiences that explain Okinawa as an archipelago.
These are editorial route anchors, not a ranking and not a claim that all ten fit one trip. Each one explains a distinct historical, ecological or logistical chapter.
🏯
1. Shuri and the Ryukyu royal capital
Begin in Shuri to understand Okinawa as the center of an independent maritime kingdom before it became a Japanese prefecture. Walk the castle landscape, royal approach and surrounding neighborhood with the reconstruction story visible. The official park states that the Seiden interior is scheduled to open on 23 November 2026; until then, the exterior, reconstruction exhibits and other park areas remain the relevant experience. Verify the exact opening phase before visiting.

2. Sefa Utaki and southeastern Okinawa
Sefa Utaki was the most sacred natural place in the Ryukyu Kingdom and remains a place of spiritual importance, not a rock formation to climb or stage. Move quietly, respect every boundary and combine it with the southeastern landscape only when transport and time allow. The official guide currently notes that entry into the Sanguui area is prohibited for protection and safety.

3. Okinawa Peace Memorial Park and museum
In the south of the main island, the prefectural museum preserves the history and individual experiences of the Battle of Okinawa and its aftermath. Give the permanent exhibitions and memorial landscape enough time for testimony, loss and postwar context; do not compress them into a resort transfer.

4. Motobu, Churaumi Aquarium and Nakijin
Use the aquarium’s Coral Sea, Kuroshio and deep-sea galleries to read Okinawa’s marine environment, then place the visit in the wider Motobu Peninsula rather than making it an isolated family attraction. Nearby Nakijin Castle ruins add the pre-unification history of the island’s northern kingdom. This is a long main-island day from Naha and often works better with a northern base.

5. Yanbaru’s subtropical forest
The forested north of Okinawa Main Island protects rare endemic species and forms part of the natural World Heritage property inscribed in 2021. Choose a defined trail, visitor facility or qualified nature activity, keep distance from wildlife and reduce night-driving risk. Yanbaru is not a scenic detour squeezed between Naha and the aquarium.

6. Kerama Islands marine chapter
Zamami, Aka and Tokashiki offer the clear waters associated with “Kerama blue,” beaches, diving and seasonal whale-watching. Pick one island and one responsible water plan instead of racing between ports. Ferry status, wind, visibility and operator rules determine what is possible on the day, so an overnight can be more resilient than a rigid excursion from Naha.

7. Miyako Islands reef-and-road chapter
Miyako’s white-sand coast, coral reefs and bridges to surrounding islands create a trip built around water access and local roads rather than a Naha extension. Match beaches and snorkeling to official safety information, protect reef life and decide how to move before booking a scattered resort. Miyako deserves several nights, not a same-day flight checklist.

8. Ishigaki and Kabira Bay
Ishigaki is both an island with its own culture and the practical gateway to Yaeyama. Kabira Bay, Shiraho Reef and the island’s interior need a realistic bus or car plan, while Ishigaki Port controls onward ferries. Build one full island day before using the city only as a transit bedroom.

9. Iriomote’s mangroves and forest
Iriomote is a largely undeveloped subtropical island within Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park and the 2021 natural World Heritage property. Explore mangroves, rivers or forest trails through an appropriate guided activity, confirm which port operates and protect the ferry margin. Wildlife habitat comes before completing a waterfall or cat-sighting checklist.

10. Taketomi’s living island landscape
Taketomi’s red-tiled houses, coral-stone walls, white-sand lanes, crafts and community traditions form a living cultural landscape rather than a theme park. Walk or cycle at village pace, respect homes and sacred places, and consider an overnight if you want the island beyond the day-trip window.

Research reviewed 15 October 2026 using Shurijo Castle Park, Okinawa Prefectural Peace Memorial Museum, Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, Japan’s Ministry of the Environment, UNESCO and the official Okinawa travel guide. The ten experiences are editorial anchors; opening phases, protected areas, ferries, flights, marine activities and weather must be rechecked for the exact date.
