What to do · editorial core
8 experiences that explain San Francisco through the bay, hills, transit, art and neighborhood history.
This is an editorial foundation, not a ranking. Each experience has a different access contract, and none should be assumed open, available or reservation-free without checking its official channel.

1. Read the Golden Gate from the Presidio
Begin at the Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center for the engineering story and current visitor orientation, then choose one nearby overlook or Presidio path. Bridge walking, parking, wind and fog are separate decisions; a clear Downtown morning does not promise visibility at the strait.

2. Give Alcatraz its own ferry window
Alcatraz is part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and all visitor access uses the private ferry company contracted by the National Park Service. Reserve the correct official product, reach Pier 33 before boarding and allow time for exhibitions, audio interpretation, terrain and the return crossing.

3. Ride a cable car as living transport heritage
San Francisco's cable cars run on three lines: two between Powell and Market and the Fisherman's Wharf area, plus the California Street line toward Van Ness. Select the line that serves the route, check live service and fare rules, and do not confuse cable cars with Muni's historic F streetcars.

4. Build a real SFMOMA visit
SFMOMA uses a multi-floor Third Street building for modern and contemporary art. Start with the current exhibition guide and any date-specific closure, then decide which floors matter; its scale rewards a focused museum block rather than a quick photo stop before the west side.

5. Use the Ferry Building as a transport-and-food anchor
The Ferry Building stands on the Embarcadero at Market Street and combines a working regional terminal with independent merchants and scheduled farmers markets. Check the exact ferry, market and merchant timetables independently, then continue by waterfront streetcar or a deliberate promenade segment.

6. Choose one Golden Gate Park system
Golden Gate Park's 1,017 acres hold museums, gardens, lakes, meadows, recreation and car-free roads. Choose the de Young or another primary institution, a garden-led walk or an outdoor circuit; trying to collect every landmark removes the slow park experience the day was meant to provide.

7. Approach Mission Dolores with historical context
Mission San Francisco de Asís was founded in 1776 and preserves the city's oldest intact building, garden and cemetery. The site also records Ohlone, Miwok and other First Californians buried there, so visit as a layered Indigenous, colonial, religious and architectural history—not merely as a picturesque chapel.

8. Pair Coit Tower's murals with Telegraph Hill
Coit Tower combines 1934 Public Works of Art Project murals, Pioneer Park and a bay-and-city observation deck. Check current elevator and ticket conditions, then choose the #39 bus or a stair approach such as Filbert or Greenwich; the steep climb is part of the route, not a hidden transfer.
