What to do
Ten experiences that make the region impossible to mistake for generic Japan.
These are editorial anchors, not affiliate inventory. Each one changes where you sleep, how you move or how much weather and reservation margin the day needs.

Chichu Art Museum: reserve architecture, light and art together
Tadao Ando embedded most of Chichu below ground to protect the Setouchi landscape, then used natural light to shape permanent encounters with Claude Monet, James Turrell and Walter De Maria. Treat the timed ticket and official open-days calendar as the fixed point of a Naoshima day.

Teshima Art Museum: understand the restored landscape around the building
Rei Naito and architect Ryue Nishizawa created a low shell among terraced rice fields overlooking the Inland Sea. The experience depends on the artwork, architecture, water, weather and surrounding land; coordinate its timed ticket with the ferry and island bus or bicycle rather than copying a Naoshima schedule.

Ritsurin Garden: read a daimyo landscape through movement
This Takamatsu strolling garden composes ponds, bridges, tea spaces, shaped pines and Mount Shiun as borrowed scenery. Arrive with enough time to walk the southern garden slowly; it works as a cultural anchor for the ferry base, not filler between island departures.

Kotohira-gu: earn the shrine through its long staircase
Konpira-san is the head of Japan's Kotohira shrines and has long been associated with protection at sea. The main shrine is reached partway up the ascent, while the full route to the inner shrine totals 1,368 steps; choose the stopping point honestly for heat, mobility and daylight.

Matsuyama Castle: connect an original keep with the modern city below
The castle crowns Mount Katsuyama above central Matsuyama and preserves one of Japan's surviving original keeps. Walk, cable car or ropeway access changes the effort but not the stairs inside the historic structure; check current operation and combine the visit with the city's tram geography.

Dōgo Onsen Honkan: use a living bathhouse respectfully
The 1894 Honkan is an Important Cultural Property and an operating public bath, not only an ornate façade. Confirm the current bathing course, admission system, tattoo and towel guidance, then leave time for the arcade and district without turning local bath etiquette into a photo exercise.

Naruto whirlpools: plan a tide window, not a guaranteed spectacle
Currents accelerate through the narrow Naruto Strait as the Seto Inland Sea and Pacific tides exchange. Use the operator's date-specific tide table and choose a sightseeing boat or the Uzu-no-Michi bridge walkway; weather and sea conditions can still weaken or cancel the experience.

🌉
Iya Valley and Kazurabashi: make remoteness part of the decision
The vine bridge sits in a steep mountain landscape whose access is as important as the sight itself. Public buses are limited and rural roads demand care, especially with weather or darkness; use Miyoshi City's current transport guidance and add Oboke or an overnight instead of forcing a rushed return.

Ryōzenji: begin a responsible sample of the 88-temple pilgrimage
Temple 1 is the customary clockwise starting point for a route that Tourism Shikoku describes as roughly 1,460 kilometers. First-time visitors can walk a limited temple section to understand ritual and dōgyō ninin; observe worship spaces and local pilgrims rather than treating the visit as costume tourism.

Kōchi Castle: see an original keep and honmaru survive together
Kōchi preserves rare Edo-period architecture, including an original keep and the main palace buildings within the honmaru. Give the steep approach and timber interiors time, then use the nearby history museum or city market to place the castle inside Tosa's political and urban story.
